Chapter Fourteen
Iâm happy to report that several days had passed without any more customers dropping dead. Maybe my bad karma was finally turning itself around. I had been working non-stop. Grandma Elsie had been training me on how to handle online purchases and she taught me how to order more stock from various vendors. I think she was just trying to keep me occupied so Iâd stay out of the murder case. Not gonna happen. Sure, I had bills to pay, but my next day off was devoted to resuming my investigation.
On an early Saturday morning, Grandma Elsie came into the living room wearing a simple dress, black as old blood, and worn flats. Tears lined her soft blue eyes.
I had been sitting on the sofa and tossing feathery toys at Sassy to chase around the room. When I finally got around to telling the Hernández family that I had Sassy, Iâd box up the cat stuff that I bought to send with her. My heart squeezed at the thought of Sassy leaving. But I couldnât get emotionally involved. Right?
âWhatâs wrong? Where are you going?â I asked, straightening.
Grandma Elsie sniffled. âAngelaâs funeral. The service is being held at the cemetery, Mourning Mortuary, and Iâm closing the shop for the day.â
I had been so busy lately that Iâd forgotten all about it. Iâd read in one of my true crime books that killers often visited the funeral of their victim and I wanted to find a new suspect for the police to look into. And Iâd bet my last jar of salsa that the killer was going to the funeral today.
âYou shouldnât go alone,â I said, and meant it. âA funeral means all suspects on deck. This might be a chance to suss out the killer.â
âDanika, I really donât thinkââ
âGive me ten minutes!â
I jumped up and went to my room to change into a black long-sleeved shirt, slacks, and low heels. Then I applied makeup and red lipstick. Yes, I was one of those women who didnât like to be seen in public without her face on. My hands shook, but two coats of Great Lash calmed my nerves. Mascara brought out the cobalt-blue in my eyes, and helped me look more awake. I picked the clumps of mascara from my eyelashes, ripping out one or two in the process. Then I blotted my lipstick on a folded tissue, and I was funeral ready.
When I returned, Grandma Elsie reclined on the couch. She stared at the wall lost in thought.
âNana? You okay?â
She didnât respond. I went to Grandma Elsie and knelt in front of her, placing my hands on her knees. Her head turned in my direction and the sorrow in her gaze made me tear up.
âYou donât have to go through this alone. Iâm here.â
Grandma Elsie patted my hand. âI appreciate that, sweetheart. I called Keisha and sheâs driving us to the cemetery.â Grandma Elsie wobbled to her feet. âSheâs waiting outside.â
âWeâll be back soon, Sassy.â I waved goodbye to the cat as she pounced on a ball stuffed with catnip.
